Nothofagus betuloides, or Coigüe de Magallanes, is one of the ten species of Nothofagus native to Chile. This family comprises in total 40 different species and is endemic only to the southern hemisphere. Nothofagus betuloides can be found in the temperate forests in the south of Argentina and Chile. In the latter, its distribution reaches from the Region of Los Lagos in the north until the Region of Magallanes in the south. The Coigüe frequently occurs in forests fringing raised bogs and flow-through bogs . Also, it colonizes islands of mineralized soils inside of bogs, where it rather develops the form of small shrubs.
